2 Book Review: The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap by Paulette Mahurin

Book Description
The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for gross indecency under Britain’s recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When news of Wilde’s conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wilde’s imprisonment. It is a chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.

Review
"It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious" - Oscar Wilde

I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. This will be one of those that I will read again. I liked how there was a little history intertwined with the story. As the story is being told you learn about the other people that live in the town as well, some with secrets.

The story takes place in a small town called Red River Pass. It beings with the town, mostly the women, in an uproar over Oscar Wilde and Lord Douglas being caught having sex together. But what is more important is that the town is not unfamiliar with homosexuality as few years ago two little boys started a gossip of what they saw which led to a terrible suicide and destroyed the lives of two families.

Mildred Dunlap is now worrying . She is a tall, masculine woman with no beauty and in love with her cousin Edra. To protect them Mildred comes up with a genius plan to show interest in Charlie, a man whose wife has just died, and Edra agrees to go along, as Mildred is so sure Charlie will reject her. However, times start to get a little out of hand.

This is a well-written book that shows how others can effect your life. There are also quotes from Oscar Wilde in the beginning of every chapter which I thought was neat.

Rating: 5 stars Loved it
